Please Support My New Group: Save Roberts Stadium!

In an effort to preserve historic Roberts Stadium, I have created the blog Please visit the site (If you haven't already) to find out what kind of various projects we can use Roberts Stadium for and what is the best location for the new ballfields.

Make no mistake, I am not against building little league ballfields here in Evansville. In fact, I think it's a good idea. However, I do not believe tearing down historic Roberts Stadium is the proper plan for Evansville.

I ask that you be vocal in your support for Roberts Stadium. Please contact your local legislators, Mayor Weinzapfel, and the Evansville Courier & Press (all contact info is on the site). I believe that with enough support, we can build quality ballfields next to Garvin Park and find a useful and productive purpose for Roberts Stadium going forward!

  1. I am totally against tearing down the Stadium. Feel there are plenty of uses for it in its present condition. Do not want to see ballfields there when there are plenty of other places in town to put them. Have got to put a stop to this action because I feel a "chosen few" in town want it and is a terrible mistake. It is a nice building and I'm sure in good shape for many more years. I wondered if there was anyway possible for it to be converted into a pool for the schools to use since Lloyd pool is the only one indoors in town. Can't believe that small towns like Newburgh and Mt. Vernon can have pools while none of our city schools have one.

  2. You raise a great point Judy. There was an actual study done for an indoor waterpark at Roberts Stadium the same time the new arena was being proposed. The study said that Evansville is a large enough market to support one. In fact, it is currently one of the 6 proposals I have come up with over at my other blog

I agree completely that Roberts Stadium is in great condition. Yes there are water pumps currently running but that can easily be filled in. It would not take $90 million to renovate Roberts the building. That's just if you want to renovate it into a new arena which is not needed now that the new arena is being built.

With several people coming forward willing to save Roberts Stadium and keep it intact, the Mayor really needs to consider doing the right thing by saving it!

  3. My name is Travis Roberts and Roberts Stadium is a part of my family history. My grandfather's (John Roberts) father, O.H. Roberts was the mayor of Evansville at the time. I do not want to see Roberts Stadium torn down to be replaced with new baseball fields. I believe the city profits from the stadium and that it should not be removed. If I can be of any help in any way, feel free to contact me @

  4. Let's make it an indoor dog park. This would be a great usage so that our dogs can get their proper exercise and socializing during the winter months.

  5. Maggie,

It would be a good idea to put a dog park either there or in one of the facilities on the Wesselman Park property. Especially if I can get the community to support my idea of building the ball fields at Kleymeyer Park...

If we build at Kleymeyer, we would probably have to move the dog park.
